We were all schooled on discounted cash flow and return on investment techniques as the basis for corporate investment decisions; however, as our education meets reality, we see so many other elements are mixed in with the quantitative assessment. For example, strategic considerations such as the network effects and synergies across business challenges the assignment of benefits; predictive analytics are replacing some decisions and supporting others; information uncertainly makes forecasting a greater challenge leading to probability and scenario approaches; and of course the corporate dynamics of the HIPPO (highest paid person’s opinion) further muddies the waters.
